Multiphase Flows of Complex Fluids

1.What was the topic of research and where did you complete your Foreign Training from?
- “The topic of my research was Multiphase Flows of Complex Fluids which is specific
to Fluid Mechanics and it deals with the interaction of Newtonian and Non-Newtonian
Fluids. The subdomain that I dealt with was about the interaction of water and similar
fluid, when they are released from a micro nozzle with a Non-newtonian fluid like a
Carbo Coal gel. I completed my Foreign Training from Laval university, Canada.”

2.Was your internship onsite or remote? (if onsite) How did you manage your finances? Did
you apply for any scholarships? What were their procedures?
- “It was an onsite internship. I applied for the IIT KGP Foundation Scholarship which
was released at IIT KGP Page as well and got selected for it and also I had to put in
some money from my end as well.”

3. What was your schedule during Foreign Training? How much time did you devote on an
average for the project per day?
- “It actually depends on the project. In my case, we had specific working hours we
had to reach till 9:30 and work till 6 which is roughly around 8-10 hours per day for 5
days a week”

4.Did you do any additional projects or courses apart from academics to attain the Foreign
Training? If so, how did you manage them?
- “I am not actually sure about whether the projects and courses are a criteria while CV
shortlisting but I guess that completing courses similar to the area of research and
background knowledge matters. Since I had many courses of Fluid dynamics in my
Aerospace Engineering curriculum, maybe that could have helped me get this
Foreign Training as it properly aligns with the research topic.”

5.What should a student who is completely unaware about the application process look up
for information about foreign training?
- “You have to follow the IR Cell page as I did the same. A lot of projects are released
in the months of November and December. You have to keep a track of those and
apply for projects you are interested in.”

6.Was CGPA a factor during the application process? (if yes) how?
- “I think it was because whenever it comes to a core project other than the Computer
Science and Data Science or ML related projects, CGPA is considered to be an
important factor while shortlisting since it shows how much you have excelled
academically in your department. Also it matters while applying for Scholarship”

7.Did Foreign Training clash with CDC? If yes, how did you handle both Foreign Training
and CDC simultaneously?
- “No, since I am enrolled in the Dual Degree Course.”

8.Did you face any cultural and language barrier during Foreign Training?
- “My internship was in the French speaking province of Canada as half of Canada is
Francophone. Even the sign boards on the roads have French on it. Before going
there I took a duo lingo course in which I learnt French for 80 days and hence I could
very well understand some part of it. So, yes you should study about the area you
are going to well in advance and prepare yourself for the same as I did. About the
cultural part, though the people do not speak English, they will help you whenever
needed with their open hearts.”

9.What role does Foreign Training play on one’s CV? Does it provide any extra benefits in
the future?
- “I think it does, since the experimental research facilities are great in the foreign
countries you will gain a good experience.”

10. How can 1st year students prepare for Foreign Training? Can you suggest any roadmap
to them?
- “For 1st year students, they should focus on exploring different fields rather than
directly jumping into the Foreign Training. They must specifically prepare for the
Foreign Training from their 2nd Year.”

11. Did belonging to IIT KHARAGPUR provide any additional benefit during the Foreign
Training or during the selection?
- “It really did as all the interns whom I met there were majorly from the IITs, IISc and
some NITs.”
