Laser welding of dissimilar metals

1. What was the topic of research and where did you complete your Foreign Training?
-” My topic of research was in Manufacturing, it was related to laser welding of
dissimilar metals. I have completed my research from the University Of Warwick.”

2. Did you apply to multiple projects? If yes can you please elaborate on the different modes
of application processes, what all did you apply in and differences in the selection process of
these projects?
-” I applied to only one project and that was from the Foreign Training Portal.”

3. Was your internship onsite or remote? (if onsite) How did you manage your finances? Did
you apply for any scholarships? What were their procedures?
-"My internship took place onsite at the University of Warwick. I received a stipend
from the University of Warwick, and I also had the support of GKF scholarship from IIT
Kharagpur, which proved beneficial during my stay there."

4. What was your schedule during Foreign Training? How much time did you devote on an
average for the project per day?
-"It was somewhat flexible. I had to attend on weekdays, starting at around 10 in the
morning and concluding at 5 in the evening. On average, I had to spend between 7 to 8
hours in the lab each day."

5. Did you do any additional projects or courses apart from academics to attain the Foreign
Training? If so, how did you manage them?
-” I did not do any other courses apart from my academics. I was mostly devoted to
my academics and it proved to be helpful for me in achieving my Foreign Training.”

6. What should a student who is completely unaware about the application process look up
for information about foreign training?
-"They should make an effort to connect with seniors who have already completed a
Foreign Internship and stay updated on the latest opportunities by regularly visiting various
websites like Mitacs."

7. Was CGPA a factor during the application process? (if yes) how?
-” It was not a factor as such but if you have a high CGPA you are always given a
preference .”

8. Did Foreign Training clash with CDC? If yes, how did you handle both Foreign Training
and CDC simultaneously?
- "Being enrolled in a dual degree course, my CDC did not overlap with my Foreign
Training."

9. Did you face any cultural and language barrier during Foreign Training?
-"My Foreign Training took place in the UK, so language was not a barrier since
everyone spoke English. Additionally, the presence of many Indians ensured that I did not
feel any significant cultural differences."

10. What role does Foreign Training play on one’s CV? Does it provide any extra benefits in
the future?
-"It undeniably provides additional advantages for the future. From the perspective of
pursuing higher studies, having a foreign research internship enhances your application to
esteemed universities, offering valuable experience and impressive letters of
recommendation."

11. How can 1st year students prepare for Foreign Training? Can you suggest any roadmap
to them?
-"The initial step for first-year students should involve discovering their most exciting
field of interest within their studies and maintaining a good CGPA. Once identified, they
should seek out professors who specialise in that field and approach them to secure projects
under them that provide hands-on experience. These projects should ideally align with the
skills required for the foreign program they intend to apply for, which can then be highlighted
on their CVs.”

12. Did belonging to IIT KHARAGPUR provide any additional benefit during the Foreign
Training or during the selection?
-"I firmly believe that being from IIT Kharagpur played a crucial role in securing my
foreign training. Furthermore, IIT Kharagpur enjoys global recognition, and professors are
aware that students from this institute are known for their hard work."
